Making the Connection

exploring best practice in music for young audiences

9.30am - 5pm on Thursday 27 February 2020, Lakeside Arts University of Nottingham

For musicians, music sector and venue professionals who want to engage children, their families, and schools with great music experiences

Music should be accessible to and inspirational for all audiences – including children and young people.  Making the Connection is an opportunity to explore how as a sector we might introduce new and young audiences to live music through exciting and immersive performance experiences.

This one-day symposium, hosted by Nottingham Lakeside Arts on Thursday 27th February 2020 and featuring speakers and case studies from the UK and beyond, including the CEO of Arts Council England, Darren Henley, aims to inspire further innovation and development in the field of music for young audiences by highlighting examples of best practice and providing space for challenge and debate.

Developed by MishMash Productions and Lakeside Arts, University of Nottingham with support and advice from:

  • Nottingham Music Hub

  • Orchestras Live

  • Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama

  • Chineke Foundation

  • Arts Council England

Theatrical Skills Workshop for Musicians

In February 2019 MishMash Productions sponsored a workshop for musicians interested in developing more theatrical performance skills.  This one-day workshop included stage skills, movement, presentation, direction, and communication.  As well as providing an excellent opportunity to work with an experienced director, musical director and creative producer the workshop gave MishMash Productions the opportunity to build a wider pool of musicians interested in this work for future productions.

‘I really enjoyed seeing how you work, experiencing a snippet of the creative process’ Workshop Participant

‘I learned such a lot, and you all did an amazing job of making us feel at ease and able to throw ourselves into it.  It's certainly got my brain whirring about how to implement some of that kind of stuff into the performance practice work we do‘ Workshop Participant

Workshops for HE Colleges and CPD for Professional Ensembles

Following the successful theatrical skills workshop we are canvassing views from a number of professional ensembles as well as colleges and academies to develop a programme of training and CPD tailored to their needs.
